Hi, I have a 15 year old mid efficiency gas furnace. When the thermostat calls for heat, I hear the fan come on and the ignitor clicking. I next hear a small whoosh sound and a see a flame and then it shuts off almost immediately. The furnace will do this around 10 times and then will sometimes light. Sometimes it will just not light at all and the blower stays on with no heat. Any suggestions.

Near the burners is probably a small probe with porcelain on it. This is the flame sensor. Remove it & clean with a piece of Scotch Brite. Reinstall & see what happens.

Thanks Grady, I'll give it a try and let you know the results!

Hi Grady, I still haven't checked the flame sensor yet, but I also just remembered that after about 4 days of the furnace not lighting properly, it stopped making the ignitor clicking sound and you could only hear the fan sound. Do you think something else was damaged because of the improper ignitor sequence, so the ignitor stopped working altogether? Thanks.

The igniton system may be bad, you may have a pressure switch not operating properly, or some other safety device keeping it from lighting.

Can this be checked with a voltage meter. My husband has one and could check it. If it can be checked what should the reading be? Are they replaceable? Appreciate the help.

Check the wiring diagram to see where the wires go. From that he should be able to tell which is 120 volts & which is 24 volts. What is the make & model of the igniton control?
