Have a Trane XE80.
Approx 5 - 6 years old
This started late this past spring. Live in chicago area.
The thermostat turns unit on (hear a click when this happens). The indicator light on the unit flashs fast indicating a call for heat. The unit comes on. The igniter starts to glow and you can smell gas. However there is no ignition. You then hear a couple of clicks. The glow from the igniter diminishes slightly then gets bright again until it clicks twice again. I continues to do this without igniting the gas. I think it is a bad igniter but not sure.
Any ideas?

If it glows, it's not bad. I suggest you remove the burners & clean them. There could be rust partially blocking the gas flow. Also look at the gas valve. If it is a Honeywell Smart Valve, the ignitor may not be lighting the pilot.
