Given that natural gas went up .50 cents per unit (ccf) here in Bflo, NY in the last month, I went out and bought a programmable thermostat. I don't want to open it and have a return issue since things are packed tighter than Fort Knox. I noticed on the back a diagram showing 3 wires. My thermo now has two wires into it. And my furnace is only 10 months old.
Any insight is appreciated.

Some thermostats need a "common" going to them some do not. If yours shows three wires, R, W, & C, I would bet it needs a common. Look for a thermostat which is battery powered. It should not need a common.

This thermo is battery powered, as was the old one. Just confused that the diagram on the package shows R, C and W, like you say. If this package wasn't sealed shut, I'd open it!

If the manufacturer has a web address listed on the package, I suggest you visit their web site. If no site is listed, do a search for the manufacturer. Good chance you will find installation & application info on the site.
