I just installed a new water heater (Whirlpool Flame Lock Model# FG1F4040S3N0V) and when I turn on the pilot, flames lit and I set the temperature, there's water leaking down to the flames. I was wondering if this is a product defect or just a minor problem with the pipes. *Also to note, when I first installed it the cold water pipe wasn't fully tightened and it was leaking when I turned it on. I just recently tightened it, and the water is leaking down to the fire.

Is it a consistent drip you hear or only when it initially fires?

It is not uncommon to hear periodical dripping on the burner upon the initial firing. It is only condensation from the chamber and baffles.
