Hello, here's 2 self explanatory photo's of adding a return air for the livingroom which has 2 heat supply 6".
Is it ok to use 6" metal pipe for the return? run is 20 ft.
Reason for adding return is weak air flow from the supplies in the livingroom,
will this project help?

Yes, you can tap into that area that you've pointed out for return..

Question for you...

How big is that return grill in the hall way??

Is that the only return you got now?? (I hope not.)

Also, what's that pipe coming from that all taped up?? (Not good!)

I take it home with out a basement? So the ductwork is under a slab?

if so, the duct maybe rusted out, and has closed off from over the years with dirt?

The returns in the hall way are as follows:
one in the ceiling 2'x1' register and one connected straight down near the floor 30"x6"

The tape you mention comes from the water heater, ( exhaust ) to the roof.

The return for the hall way, are they on top of each other? if yes, almost would want to say you are not getting enough arei going back into the furance..


So go ahead and add another return..

Is this water heater short?? or furnace just happend to be pretty tall??

I don't like the tape.. Why are they there?

:thumbup: Yes, there on top of each other, really... all the rest of the heat supplies have stronge air flow because all the rooms have doors close to air return in the hall way and the doors are cut 1" shorter.
The only room that wasn't part of the ranch that was added after the whole heating system is the living room and is has a good distance to go to get some return air .
So I'll let you know about the progress.
Decide im gonna go with 9" metal pipe with a damper installed about 4' from the furnaces trunk.

The tape was there when I bought the home 10 years ago I wonder a bit to about that ... but I thought maybe extra protection for the seems.
