I have a 1926 brick veneer bungalow. I want to weatherseal the soffit and frieze boards to keep out cold air and insects but was advised in the Lumber & Siding forum that I should have weep holes in my brick veneer. There are none. I was guessing that weep holes weren't a big deal back in the 1920s because water vapor would go right out thru the attic but now I've finished the attic and we blew in cellulose in the stud bays where possible.

We cannot attribute any problems to not having weep holes: There is no noticeable moisture, rot or odor inside or out, but it's hard to tell what's going on inside a wall. I've had a couple of masons look at the brick for other projects and they say it's in great shape, just needs a little tuckpointing.

Should I add weep holes?

If so, what size?

Code seems to require weep holes no smaller than 3/8" round and that would be a cinch with a hammer drill, but presumably the larger the better and in new construction they seem to be the height of the course. But then how would I keep cold air out and still let moisture out?

Just adding weep hole would be close to worthless without the proper flashing that goes along with it.
