View Full Version : using Luan as a subflooring?

I am going to use Luan plywood for my flooring so that I may paint my own pattern on for my floor. Can I use glue to put this quarter inch plywood down? I was told I didn't need to use nails that the glue would hold it! I find this hard to believe that it wouldn't pop up later on down the road. Althought this would give me a much smoother look than having to go back and fill in the nail holes. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

One question about where you are going to be doing this, Is it a high traffic area? If it is then i suggest using a thicker piece of luan, and the glue may hold alot better. And when you glue it, it may be a good idea to use a notched trile to spread the adhesive out. I was in a house not to long ago that had quarter inch luan down one the floor and it was glued down, and every where I took a step it popped because it was either not glued good enough or it was because the glue had come loose from the pressure of walkiing on it and being that it is quarter inch material it gave when you walked on it and broke free. So it may be a good idea if you go with a thicker piece of luan. I'd also like to know what kind of design you are going to put on the floor, you made me courious. I hope this helps you some.

Thanks Ric for your input! It is greatly appreciated! I was very leary about using the luan, it seems to soft! So I went to a Birch but did stick with the 1/4 inch! I did use a trowel though and spread it out, but can't believe over time that it wouldn't pop up. So I used a stapel gun and nailed it down, not wanting to use big nails and have them show. Then went back and filled seams and holes with putty. I have painted my floors before but had someone else lay it and didn't pay attention to what they did!! Only he used big nails to put it down and I was wanting to get away from that. I have painted and stenciled almost everything in my home. I painted my family room floor, laying it out in squares like 12" tile sponged it with light beiges and then came back and painted the Ohio Star (quilt pattern) in a country red here and there on the floor.. trying to make it look like an old quilt. Everyone who looks at it, thinks it is linoleum!! They can't believe its painted.. Of course, I put lots of varnish on it. This room I'm doing now is a guest bedroom. I plan on sponging the walls and then painting a garden theme over that and I'm still trying to figure out how I'll do the floor.. Working on a color scheme for it. But oh how my knees do hurt when I get done! I did use thicker wood on the other floors, hope I'm not sorry for using the 1/4 inch here!! Thanks again for your input!!
