I am re-doing my barn and have true 2x6 rafters etc and going to have semi cathedral ceilings so need to fit in R30 and 2X6 not deep enough...... I do not want to pad out and add weight etc...and framing etc... can anyone suggest the right way to go about this without spending tons of money and doing it right. is there an insulation made that I can put in 2x6 that will have the same rating and the building inspector would OK? I also need to vent it so should I add those plastic ridge vent things..... thanks all
Steve

If you are going to be finishing the interior of the ceiling, you could go with a combination of extruded polystyrene (little weight) on the interior and fiberglass between the joists. This gives you the opportunity to have a true thermal barrier and not lose heat through the joists. The thickness of the foam would depend on the type and the amount neede to make up for the fiberglass deficiency.
