My grndmother asked me to help her with her floor. She has a single strip of 3/4" oak flooring in the middle of the floor that has split along its length. My questions are 1) isa there a short term fix that works well (maybe just wood glue) to keep the sliver of boared down?, 2) what is the best long term solution?, and 3) What would cause the board to split?

Thanks,

Carl

Depending on the extent of the split. A small defect could be glued down or sanded smooth, then refinished. If major, I would replace the piece. You will have to carefuly cut out the section. Set your skill saw to the depth of the plank, run along about an inch away from the edge to miss the cleats, chisel out the remains. To fit the new piece, cut the bottom of the groove off. Apply glue, then fit into place.
