We are considering installing Wilsonart laminate flooring, but have been advised by friends that it wears holes in stockings very quickly. I have read that this brand of laminate flooring has a "heavy aluminum oxide wear layer". Aluminum oxide is one type of abrasive used in sandpaper. The connection is obvious. Does anyone have experience with or knowledge of this problem?

It's not rough like sand paper, but because it is so hard it would probably be tough on your socks.
