I'm planning to tile my fireplace surround, which presently consists of concrete block built by a mason. It's level and plumb, but definitely has some rough bits due to the mortar. Do I need to install backerboard before I tile, or should I just skim coat using some thinset? Let me add that I'm a novice and have no experience doing either... Thanks in advance.

Do like you are thinking. Put a good thick coat of thinset and set your tile right on top of your cinderblock.
