Hello:
A bit surprised on the quote by the Installer for a 10 yr P&L extended warranty for a new Trane Gas Hot Air furnace
(residential; the 80% model, 120 K, 2 stage, with var. speed blower)
Model No. TUD 120 R 9V5K
Does $700 sound in the ball park for a 10 yr P&L for this type of unit ?
Thanks,
B.

I looked at my bid from my system. and it was not broken down.. I am guessing mine was in that range.. I also got a rebate back from trane on it, and the furnace...
The way I look at it.. I KNOW I am covred for 10 years, NOT a penny out of my pocket if something did go wrong, or no sticker shock if the variable speed blower control or motor went out.
It's a peace of mind for 10 years.. With cost of things going up who knows what a service call may cost 8 years later.. If I recall, you can transfer the warranity.
how big is the home?? 120 sounds pretty big!

Generally speaking, you will come out ahead if you take the amount the extended warranty would cost and put it in a savings account to then be used for repairs. You have to keep in mind that the company selling you the warranty is making money on them - overall, the cost of repairs will be less than the money they brought in selling the warranties. In any particular case, however, all bets are off. What you are buying is insurance. I don't buy extended warranties, but they are the right answer for lots of people.

If the only piece of equipment is 80% AFUE var speed furnace(no evap coil, outdoor AC condensor, thermostat, air filter?), then yes I believe it is high. I would question dealer on this or perhaps call another dealer for quote. And like Jay says, a 120BTU furnace is big. Did you have a Manual J heat/cool load calc performed? I hope so. Depending upon area you live, I don't like 80% AFUE gas furnaces because of the spiking cost of nat gas.
My opinion.

What do you have to do to keep the warranty in effect? Are you required to have unit service annually by a dealer or can you do it?

M,
If I recalled, I read the contract over, it didn't say anthing thing that I must have a yearly service by the company.. I asked the guy, he said as long I keep everything up. (filter changes, checking burners area.. maint) it will be fine.
