We just purchased a new house and unfortunately, the previous owners decided to put borders *everywhere* --including on top of nicely painted paneling. We have had success in removing borders and wallpaper from a few places, but not the paneling. A few questions:

1. Do you have any suggestions? We have been using vinegar/water and DIF. The outer portion will peel off with some effort, but the white backing remains. In one (upper) corner, we tried scoring in desparation --it didn't work, but we also realized that it was going through to the wall :(

2. Is any way to 'fix' the small score marks in the painted paneling before we repaint it all.

3. Is all of this just a waste of our time, and if so, is it possible to hang drywall over paneling? (just exploring all the options here)

Thanks!

sorry - seems like your question has been overlooked! :o my reply will bump it back up to the top, where hopefully a pro will see it!

in the meantime.....

no telling what kind of adhesive was used, since it's so hard to remove. ??? surely, after a while, saturating it with hot water & DIF will remove the paper. it might just take forever though! you could try sanding it off, or at least super smooth, to where you wouldn't detect it under your new paint job. i think you can use wood filler to repair your score marks. sand it smooth once dry, then prime over it & then paint.

i don't think it's recommended to hang drywall over paneling - remove the panels first & hang sheetrock directly to studs (but i'm not a pro in that area). if you go that route, re-post your question in the Walls & Ceilings topic.
