I have a red brick floor to ceiling fireplace which I am going to paint. What is the best solution to clean the bricks with to prepare it for painting? Thanks.

I used a solution of Dawn and bleach to clean mine. You'll have to use more "elbow grease" on the soot areas :wall: . Then once I did that, I white washed the fireplace rather than painted a thick coat. It looks really good. The white wash allowed the natural brick to come through and the ugly dark red brick was gone. :D

Thanks for your reply. I haven't heard of white washing the brick. How did you do it? When you white wash, do some of the variations of color in the brick still show through? I wouldn't mind having the brick show through, as long as it is much lighter and the red is gone.
