I have about 150sf of stone veneer that I'd like to use to redo my ugly fireplace (oak plywood over drywall). To be clear, these are the faces of stone removed via sawing - varying thicknesses between 1" and 2". I've seen one method of new installation which is to put plywood/tar paper/steel mesh/raked mastic/mortar/stone. What can I do in this case? Can I hang these heavy stones on drywall that is, most likely, on 2x4 framing?

I would have to say no, you can't put stone veneer over drywall(thats ALOT of weight). Best bet would be to ask the supplier for what they recommend, But I would think at a minimum it would be at least concrete backer board. If you already have plywood up you may be able to use that in conjunction with the wire and mortar.

TomThomas, Let me know what you find out from the supplier. I'm in the same situation at my house. Thanks, momo
