Whirlpool dryer has started to squeek or rather squeel while spinning. Without power, if I turn the drum by hand, I can duplicate the squeel. Is this the drive belt and/or pulley? I see that Whirlpool sells a dryer repair kit. Is this something the average diy'er can handle?

You can do it. take a look here. as long as that is what is making the noise which it probably is.Make sure you replace all the new parts in the kit not just some.

Thank you. When I got inside I could not find a problem with the belt or any of the pulleys. I do hear the squell coming from the main drive shaft so I used some spray lithium lube and it has been quieted somewhat. Doesn't seem like a final solution, though.

I have isolated the problem to be the main motor shaft. Squirted some WD40 onto the axle and gave it a rap with a hammer. Some of the noise went away but then the drive shaft seized up completely.
Is this a dryer throwaway when the motor shaft seizes or is there something that can be done short of replacing the drive motor?
