Can I use 1/4" cementboard for floor tiles? (As opposed to say 1/2" cement board). This would obviously be installed on top of 3/4" plywood subfloor.

I figure if I use 1/4" cement board, with 1/4" of tile and about 1/4" of grout, the total thickness will roughly match my 3/4" flooring, so the threshold from the hallway to the bathroom will be smooth.

Yes, that's what it's made for, don't forget the thinset under the cementboard.:)
