I am gutting a basement bathroom and will stud it and would like to insulate the exterior wall which half of the wall is below grade. I have read that you shouldn't insulate anymore than 2ft below grade since water can freeze at the foundation footing and crack it if there isn't proper exterior drainage. Is this a fact or should I insulate the whole wall? I do not have any moisture problems.

Insulating to 2 feet below grade is the minium required by the building code. The majic word is "minimum".

At one time, people believed that frost problems will occur if insulation extends to the floor. Scientific research has proven this to be false.

Insulate right to the floor...your feet will thank you.
