one section of hardiboard we laid (about a 5'' by 6'' area) is about 1/16th
higher along the joint with another sheet. is there any way to correct this without removing the 3 x 5 sheet? we thought maybe we could cut and trim it down and then level it with thinset. any suggestions greatly appreciated.

First, did you use thinset under the Hardie?:)
You can sand it smooth or just use a 3/8" trowel, 1/16" is not bad.:)
Or tape and feather out the from the joint to even it out, let cure a few hrs. or more than set the tile over it.:)
