I am planning a basement refinishing project and am planning to use nominal 2X3 (actual depth 2 5/8") metal studs--the basement is not huge, so I'd like to conserve space, if possible. Can I use 3 1/2" fiberglass insulation between the studs? I wasn't sure if a minimum of depth for 3 1/2" insulation is 2X4 stud. If not 3 1/2" insulation, then what is recommended?

Thanks in advance?

You will lose some insulation value due to the compression of the insulation.

For a basement, its no big deal. You lose more than that by using steel instead of wood.

Thanks for the reply. I thought of using metal instead of wood because I thought metal would stand-up better to moisture than wood. In your opinion, does the benefit in moisture tolerance of metal offset the loss of insulating capacity? I guess what I'm asking is, "Which material gets the overall edge?"

Sounds like a personal preference to me.
What will you notice more? Losing an inch along the wall d/t standard 2x4 framing, or less insulation in the walls as well as increased heat transfer through metal studs?

Personally, I like cheap, toasty warm rooms. I'd go with wood and non-compressed insulation. I can't see an inch making a big difference in the 'feel' of the room.

Purchase the appropriate insualtion for your wall cavity or else it is a waste of money.

IMO, use 2x4 wood studs and the appropriate insulation for this wall type.
