Contractors did a lousy job constructing the basement sump pump pit -- looks like they didn't use a cement vibrator to get the air out. As a result, their are gaps through the walls of the pit to the clay subsoil below the layer of gravel under the floor slab. Water draining in fills the pit with clay.

Any tips on how best to patch these gaps? They are fairly large -- where one wall meets the floor, the gap is an inch wide and 18 inches long. Is there a special type of cement that should be used where it will likely come in contact with water as it is curing (water is slowly seeping into the pit)? Does anything need to be done to ensure good bonding of the new cement to old?

Thanks for any advice you can provide.

Hydraulic cement is used to patch weeping cracks/gaps. It sets up very fast, so don't mix up too much at a time. It should be available at most hardware stores/home centers. Good luck.

Fix it as fast as you can.

The water is washing clay out from under the slab. Your slab can lose support and crack. If you lose more support is can settle.

Your sump pump is continually pumping out the clay into somewhere.

Finished the job an hour ago. Hydraulic cement seems to have done the trick. Thanks for the quick advice, guys.
