I am laying ceramic tile in my house on a 50 year old cement slab. 2 bathrooms, a kitchen, a dining/living room and a hallway. My question is about grouting against walls and cabinets. I am leaving a 1/4" gap between the tile and the walls and cabinets. Can I fill that space with grout or do I need to fill it with caulk? It is not appearance that I am concerned with as these places will be concealed with molding, but rather shifting and the way that affects the tiles. In what I have read I have seen that caulk is suggested but I have not seen that you should absolutely not grout. I am asking in part because I already have grout, but would need to buy caulk.

You should never grout there, period. :alarm:
Caulk it, or leave it open, I caulk it, even if getting covered, keeps dirt and critters out.:)
Also, does that slab have any cracks, sealers or paint on it.:)

Does that also apply to the gap by the front door in an entry? ( Yes, it's me, still toiling away when I get a moment :-) now laying the tile....). If I leave it open, it will definitely get full of dirt..... yech!

At the doorway use color match sanded caulk. Its in the grout aisle.
