I'm insulating some exterior 2x4 walls and have had some advice from someone who claims to know what they are doing, but I'm not sure their advice is sound. I have 2x4 walls, and he says to get fiberglass insulation that is made for 2x6 walls and sandwich that in place. Does this make sense? Doesn't fiberglass insulation need a certain amount of fluffyness?
I'm in Michigan so the winters get to the teens and twenties usually and the summers average in the 90's.
Also, if the house is going to be "housewrapped", does the insulation need kraft backing?

No it does not make sense, fiberglass insulation is made for a specific cavity space. By compacting it, you actually will have less value then using the proper insulation.

With Hellrazor for sure. Also you need the V/B inside. We use the paper backed insulation paper to the room tack it inside the studs .Then hang a whole sheet of 4 mil poly over the whole wall then dry wall. If you can let it cover the windows till after you paint. Helps in the clean up

If the insulation is paper backed and the exterior "wrapped" is a vapor barrier still necessary?

"No ----BUT" it is sure worth it. To seal the whole wall with the V/B covers any holes you have in the paper. It only cost pennies.
