I have about 4 inches of blown insulation in my attic, which is not near enough.

Can I just purchase the insulation that I see at Lowe's with the highest R value and lay it down right on top of the blown insulation?

Should I tape the strips together?

Is there anything I should be careful of (other than the nails from the roofing material that is sticking down ready to get me)?
