Plywood and linoleum were laid over a hardwood floor. In pulling up this ugly mess all these nail hole were left in the floor. Is sanding and polyurethaning enough to cover this? Thanks

No. The holes need to be filled with a wood filler before you sand the floors. Go to your home store or hardware and get a wood filler for the job. They make the fillers in various shades to match the wood color.
