I really don't know what the exact purpose of this, but its the cylinder shaped spout next to the kitchen sink faucet. When the dishwasher runs I get some leakage from it. Sometimes it just flows into the sink sometimes water runs along the back of the counter top. What is causing the excess water to spill out and can it be fixed??

The item is an Air Gap. They are required in most States. They keep the dishwasher water from backing up. Not sure if it is repairable. May have to replace it. If you can find a name on it, you could check with the manufacturer. Good luck.
