I've never layed a laminate floor, or any other floor. Is there a video I can watch on the net to give me a general idea how to do this?

I'm reading the instructions and the first thing that has confused me is the requirement of spacing.

I've taken off the baseboards and I see that my walls don't actually touch the floor, when the wallboard was hung it was set to rest on nails. So I have a half an inch gap between the floor and the wallboard consistently all around the room. The laminate planks easily slide underneath the wallboard. Aren't I suppose to leave a 1/4 in gap here? If I just slide the laminate under the drywall I fear it will be too tight and won't float. But I can't figure out how to get a spacer in this little crack. the wallboard is 3/8 in thick.

the good part about this gap is it allows a plank to slide easily underneath the door frames so I don't have to cut the plank with a profile of the frame.

ask for videos at the places that sell the flooring. the manufacturer of the floating laminate flooring we used had an "installation kit" that included a video, pull bar, tapping block, etc. for $15 or so. money well spent. i would think many brands would have accompanying kits/videos.

we had the same drywall gap as you. i'm not a pro, but this is what i did: i used short little pieces of the flooring as spacers, since it was about 1/4" or so, and good & stiff, and set it vertically against the wall. it stayed in place when the first row was snugged up against it. you could use any scrap wood that's 1/4" thick. you might even want/need to tack a nail in the top of them to hold them in place, til you're done & need to remove them. basically, you need to ignore the extra bonus space you've found under the drywall, because you're right - there's no way to put a spacer in there & get it back out! at least, i couldn't figure out a way to! any of the pro's have a tip/secret on this?

of course, this is the type of quirky thing that's NOT addressed in the installation instructions or on the video!! thank goodness for this website, huh?! :D

Pergo use to have installation videos, as did ALLOC, and Wilsonart, but I have not seen them on the shelves in years.

Anyone know a good videotographer? We could make a fortune, after the final edit and marketing campain!!!! :)
