I’m trying to add to the deteriorated insulation under my ground floor, above a crawlspace. I’ve been putting in new insulation batts over the old, deteriorated ones, but with the paper facing out (toward the ground) rather than in. This in effect creates two moisture seals, since the old paper is above the old insulation. Will doing this cause a problem?

Yes.

If the original insulation still has a vapor barrier intact, you have a few options.

Slash one of the layers of insulation. Best to leave the paper against the conditioned space. So slash your brand new insulation. This doesn't look good =/

Better = Use unfaced insulation for your second layer.

Best = rip out the old, and install new, faced insulation with the kraft paper against the conditioned space.

Ok, I can do any of those three, but what is the problem I will create by doing none of them?
