We purchased a contemporary Danish dining room table and hutch. The color scheme is black and red which is clashing with our current wall color. What wall colors could work with the new furniture?

White looks good with black and red. So does gold. Pick up some paint chips and take them home with you. Study them at different times of the day and night under natural and artificial light.

as 12pole said, white or gold would work. as would anything in between, such as gray or cream. and a nice chocolate brown would actually be good, too. it just depends on the overall look you're going for.

and if picking one single color is too difficult, think about using a 2 or 3-tone faux finish. a tone-on-tone stripe would add a lot more interest than just one solid paint color. and a multi-tonal marbelized effect could incorporate both gold & red colors. maybe you could benefit from a chair rail painted black to further incorporate the furniture into the room. then maybe paint one color on top and another on bottom.

it may be easier for you to decide if you don't restrict yourselves to only one color for the walls.

also, your flooring plays as much of a role in your decision as does your furniture, and you didn't even mention what's there. will you be changing it? what is it now?

Thank you, twelvepole and Annette.

We were thinking possibly goldenrod which goes along with twelvepole's approach. But the chocoate brown is quite intriguing, as well. What is a tone-on-tone stripe? We definitely want to keep away from the traditional white/cream/gray on the walls. Our floor is thick carpet, originally called scent of lavender, but basically it's now a white to beige concept. The carpet will be staying for now.

a tone-on-tone stripe is a stripe using a lighter & darker shade of the same color (only 1 or 2 shades apart though). sometimes it's the same color in each stripe but one stripe is flat & the other is glossy. either way, it's a very subtle stripe. very traditional & rich looking. perfect for dining rooms. great when you want basically one solid color, but jazzed up a bit for interest.

if you think you might be using an area rug under the table, find that first and then choose a paint color to coordinate.
