I'm considering putting in a bamboo floor in my beachside condo. I've seen them in the Los Angeles area and they seem very beautiful. I've been told they are more resistent to moisture and are harder than most hardwoood floors. Not to mention they are more environmentally sensitive. Any downsides that you know of?

I can tell by your question, you have never worked with bamboo. If you want a piece of very good advice, forget about doing it yourself, and hire it done. It will not be cheap. If you try to do it yourself, you will soon hate bamboo.

I meant to write that I am considering buying a bamboo floor from a company (who would then install it). My question was meant to ask whether people would recommend buying such a floor over Oak or Maple.

We just put bamboo flooring in our bathroom 2 weeks ago. It's easy. We didn't use nail gun, just pre-drill. It's a little denser than hardwood (like oak). Only complain we have is they come in same length and we have to cut and mix to make a natural pattern. It shouldn't be a problem for a bigger area. We were told that they don't take stain well and what you see is what you get.
It looks pretty good even without filling and sanding. We are not pros (only experience we have is patching a closet size oak flooring). You can do it. Good Luck!
