We have 3 children and a dog and think that a wood floor in the kitchen is not workable, but we like the look.
My question is: Can a wood floor work in a kitchen with children under 12 and survive without us having significant maintenance issues or major scratches? What kind of wood would do the trick?

Jerry,
We have had oak flooring in our kitchen for 5 yrs.I wouldn't change it for anything.
It stands up well with very little maintence
and we live on a farm and we have 6 dogs.

We recently installed 3 1/4" grade 3 maple flooring in our kitchen, dining and front entry/hall and we love it. Most think it's hickory. We went for the commercial grade satin finish coat which was recommended since we have 4 kids under 7. The commercial grade will hold up to most anything -the satin hides a lot of the scuff marks you would see in semi-high gloss finish. I love the wood flooring in the kitchen - easy on the knees and very warm on bare feet. I highly recommend it.

As long as you get educated on wood floors.
Wood is fine in the kitchens as long as expectation levels are kept in check.
