What do you recommend placing under a area rug on a finished wood floor to protect the floor and prevent slippage?

Here's a really neat trick I learned a couple of years ago. You take the rubber gasket rings from pickling jars (mason jars) and tack stitch them on the corners of the rugs. If it's a large rug or a runner, you can tack additional rings in appropriate spots on the sides.
This is really inexpensive and works like a charm.
