I recently moved into a condo where the previous owners were Indian. The kitchen cabinets have a very strong curry-spice type scent to them and I need to find an effective way to get rid of it. I've tried leaving some baking soda open for a week in each cabinet, as well as boiling some cinammon sticks. Neither have produced any permanent results so far. I've even left some boiled coffee misting in the cabinets. I can temporarily relieve some of the odor if I turn on the vent for a while.
I'm almost at the point of considering just replacing the cabinets entirely, although that's an expensive proposition. Any ideas?

Is there like wallpaper on the back side of the cabnets or shelves? If so this may have absorbed the odor and needs replaced. I would clean the cabnets if you havent already with a oil soap using the hottest water possible and see where that takes you.

No wallpaper that I can see. What is "oil soap?"

Oil soap...Like Murphys oil. I would use the hottest water possible and clean the wood. This will most likely take any polish that may have been applied off. So, you will have to reapply.

Perhaps washing interior of cabinets and shelving with bleach/water solution will remedy the cabinet odor problem. If not, you may have to lightly sand cabinet interiors and seal with a couple coats of polyurethane.
