Motorcycles, Snowmobiles, Go-Carts, ATV's and Golf Carts - Suzuki Quadrunner won't start

I bought the used '98 quad a couple years ago and ran it a few times without any problems. Time got away from me and chore followed chore and the poor thing has been ignored until this past weekend. It probably hasn't been started in over a year at least. I charged the battery and changed the oil. All are a go there. The starter turns over but it won't start past there. There was old gas left in it and I'm afraid the carbuator has been gunked up from it. I know where the carburator is but that is the extent of my knowledge. What should I do to remedy this issue? Can the carburator be cleaned without buying a new one? Is there a fuel line I should replace? Is there anything else I should check, clean, or replace?

Any help with this would be much appreciated and thank you in advance.

You do not need a new carb !


you can try and do yourself, carbs are really not that hard to take apart and clean as long as you dotn turn or mess with the idle, mixture screws.

It might even need a carb kit.

I typically see $75 for a shop to do it. Carb kits run around $34.00.


Also look at the air filter, and inside the intake whole, sometimes little critters like to make this there home. Might need cleaned out.

I always do a process, when its not running, something like this.

1. check spark, got spark

2. check fuel, make sure is good

3. check carb

yuo can always spray some starter fluid into the cylinders and see if it starts for second.

This would determine if its more than likely the carb.


but more than likely ya got old fuel and a gummed up carb from fuel sitting in the float bowl.

Alright, I'm gonna try and pull it apart tonight. I picked up a can of carb cleaner. As long as I don't touch the two screws on it I shouldn't mess anything up?

while you have the carb off you would probally want to take a safety pin an clean any gunk out of all the small holes, spray it with the carb cleaner and put it back on. that should do it but if not let us know. also get some starting fluid, it will start even if the carbs are gunked up so that will let you know your carb is your problem.

Don't use a safety pin as it's tapered and can enlarge those small holes. use small wire from parts tags or torch tip cleaner wires.
I don't like starting fluid as too much of it can bend a conn rod, pour a teaspoon of gas in spark plug hole and try it. if it tries to run for a few seconds, then yes, the carb needs cleaned.

When you get it running again and decide it will be parked for awhile, either drain tank and run carb dry or add Stabil to gas and run long enough to make sure stabil is in carb float bowl.

when it gets hot it cuts out. If i let it cool off, it will start up and run until hot again. What should I do?
