I'm getting ready to install carpeting in my basement, family room, and playroom. The basement has never leaked, and remains 30% humidity. Is a heavy berber carpeting installed over good padding the best choice, or an indoor/outdoor carpet with or without padding a better idea?

Your Berber/padding choice is the best way to go. Installing commercial carpeting directly over concrete will change the look but not the feel of the floor.

Berber is one of the toughest styles around and along with a good underpad will change the look and feel of the rooms.

The cheaper way is always the direct glue down of commercial level loop. Sometimes due to poor floor conditions and even dampness in the air this choice is made. There are some beautiful variations. If not going with pad i would bump up to a heavier weight. Most people get 20 ounce, id bump up to at least a 26 oz.

If your basement is good otherwise, then yes! a good pad (a nice 40 ounce felt or a berber support is good. The felt is MUCh cheaper)

I cant stress enough also to please pay attention to seems. ASK! about where your seams are going and if buying 15 foot material will benefit you. they make it for a reason!!!!
