I'm getting ready to paint Fiber Cement lap siding on my house. I was told to use 100% acrylic latex paint. I prefer to use Benjamin Moore products, like their Mooregard Acrylix Latex in low lusture finish. I was told by the rep from BM that because the paint has linsead oil in it and it will react with the fiber cement that I should prime it with BM Fresh Start 023 100% Acrylic primer to create a protective seal so the top coat won't react with the cement. The fiber cement is factory primed (Certainteed brand). I plan to clean the surface with a TSP substitute before priming.
#1 - Is the BM Mooregard premium coating paint a good product for this, it has a 25 year warranty.
#2 - Is there a better method for painting that I should follow?
#3 - Should I just find a 100% Acrylic Latex paint to use, BM Moorguard is an enhanced paint with resins and vinyl additives. Do 100% acrylic paints last as long? There has to be a reason they "enhance" these paints.
Thanks in advance

I don't run into Fiber Cement lap siding around here
If I did, I would take the rep's advice and prime with Fresh Start
As I also like to use Ben Moore paints, I would use them on such a surface
The additives and enhancing is done to try and make a better paint, but it is always a compromise, what seals better doesn't stick as well, if it drys to quick you get lap marks, etc...
There was a good debate about acrylic a little while ago
I think the outcome was really to trust your local paint rep for your particular situation, but you can decide for yourself:

Is the Mooregard the best of BM paint line I can put on there? I've seen the Super Spec but don't know if it's an option, or worth the cost for upgrade. The Mooregard looks like a great long lasting topcoat to me.

I use the Moorguard all the time
Works great
I do suggest Super Spec if it's a high mildew/mold area
I have to deal with alot of that around here
(I don't want my customers to call me back in 3 months with mildew on their new paint ;))

I'm in Grand Rapids, MI so mold is not really an issue where I'm at. I'm in an open area with good breezes and drainage.
I think I'll go with the Mooregard and fresh start primer, sounds like a good combination to me, also since the BM rep recommended it but it's good to hear a second opinion. I want to trust the products I'm using and I'm willing to pay more for better performance.
Thanks.

Me too
Good luck with your project
I don't know how cold it is at night in Grand Rapids, MI. in the fall
If you wait much longer you might want to keep an eye on the overnights
I think Mooreguard is good down to around 40* or 45*, but you might want to check the can, or with the rep, as some paints it's 50*
I can usually get into October w/o any problems with the Moorguard

It's good down to 50, but if I paint during the mornings and it's pretty dry by nightfall, won't it be ok? How long does it have to be above 50 for it to be safe to drop below that temp?
Forcast says lows could reach 49 over the next 10 days. Most days are lows of 50's.

No worries
That'll do
"could" reach one degree below the recommended temp. won't hurt

Thanks, so then is it ok if it gets down to the low 40's if it was painted in the mornings. I have more siding to install and won't get to paint it for a few weeks and it gets down to the low 40's during that time.

That's really pushing the envelope, simpsonb
If the can says 50, then there's no guarantees @ anything below that
A chance of 1* wouldn't stop me
For sure 8* below....I'd really have to have a reason (a customers insistance), and a full understanding that I may have to do it again (I'd make them sign a waiver)
You might get away with it but I wouldn't recommend it

OK, looks like I have to get going on it soon then. The next week is going to be fine but after that I'll have to pick my days carefully. Only so many hours in a day!
Thanks for all your advice.

SWP has low temp paint good down to 35 degrees if I'm not mistaken. I don't know if BM has low temp paint or not. Just something to consider :)

I thought Mooreguard was a low-temp paint
I think maybe I have been "pushing the envelope" with that one lol
I can sometimes get into Nov. with exteriors and decks around here
Maybe I'm confusing it with something else
That's why I always read the labels
I'll have to check on that

It's MooreGlo, good to 35*F
I know, I know, Mooreguard, Mooreglo....details, details....
