Hi,

I just got a used single family in which a bedroom is painted RED. I need to change it to the regular light colour. It looks like the previous owner used oil paint.

How do I change the colour of the wall?. Should I scrap off the RED Paint and Primer and Recoat with Light colour paint?. I think the other places are not oil based. It's the original paint done by the builder.

Please let me know the procedure to do while working with removing oil paint to repaint with the original builder paint and also to remove the other paints and go back to the original Painting.

I am not sure if it's a oil based or the flat matt stuff ? It would be a great appreciation if somebody helps me to execute it.

Thanks,
rajmmanohar

i doubt the walls have oil base on them but to play it safe [and you need to prime any way] I would sand and prime with oil base kilz or similiar primer. You would then be ready to apply flat [or whatever sheen you want] latex to the walls. It shouldn't be necesarry to remove the paint from the walls.

You could also have the primer tinted to the color you want to paint, that way it might be a bit easier.

Don't scrape the red off, its not necessary. As Mark said, sand and prime.
Make the sanding easy. Get a sanding pole. You don't need much pressure. Just a light sanding is all you need.
