I am having a terrible time trying to match my new bedding. The bedding is very rich in colour, the base is gold jaquard with stripes of deep red and blue running through. My bedroom suite is Cherry Wood and I wanted to create a warm rich feeling in the room. I consulted a "colour specialist" and the colours she suggested ending up looking like butterscotch/caramel on the walls. Cany anyone suggest some shades for the walls that will bring out the richness yet not overpower the room. I am also looking for a neutral colour to run through the living room and hall to get away from the white's and creams. Any thoughts appreciated.

Do you WANT a rich color on the walls? Or are you looking for a more subtle color? I'm a little confused by your question! What is it that you don't like about the butterscotch color recommended by the specialist? Does it seem like the wrong tones to you, or is it too dark? Too rich?
Since you've got bedding that is 'dark' and strong, and furniture that's dark, you've got to decide what look you want for the room. Do you care if it's a darker room? My own bedroom is (the walls are burgundy), but we don't mind! We love that it's a dark, romantic retreat. But not everyone would like that. Then you might want to opt for some shade of tan/beige on the walls.
Regarding your other question...you need to give us a little more information about your living room & hallway. How are they decorated? What fabrics, colors, and woods (etc) are in the rooms? Flooring?

Because both the bedding and wood have such rich tones, I am trying to find something that will make the colours on the bedding "pop out" but not overwhelm. I've been trying shades of soft gold but all seem to have either too much green or brown undertones, and that is the problem with the origional colour we tried. The depth of colour would be fine if it wasn't so orange/brown. My husband does not particularly like the walls too dark.
As for my second question with looking for a neutral for the living room and hall area, we have a combination of oak flooring with beige rug in the central area. I'm curious to know what is popular, I know it would be better to wait unitl the the furniture is replaced in a few months but it needs freshening up now. Currently our couch and loveseat are black with veins of pastel colours running through it.

i'm also confused! my first thought was going to be a gold color. the only other choices i see would be a lighter creamier version of the gold, or deep red or blue. but really, for a rich look, the deep red or blue wouldn't be that good. too mixy-matchy (unless you installed a chair rail and did the deep red below with the gold above.) the classy choice for a warm rich room would be a gold tone. it'd be beautiful with your cherry wood.
butterscotch & carmel sound like maybe they're too brown, instead of gold. she probably wanted to err on the side of brown so it didn't turn out too bright yellow.
i'd keep tweaking the gold tones til you find one that goes better with your bedding.
did you take a pillow sham into the paint store with you? maybe they could color match it for you. and then go a few shades lighter or darker, whichever you'd prefer.
what's the carpet in the bedroom? if it's tan or taupe, maybe the gold walls are just too blah?

Thanks for the advice, didn't mean to sound confusing. I have been trying to expand on the gold since I had also thought that the best way to achieve what I wanted. Unfortunately the pattern threads are intertwined and colour matching will not work. When I took a sham into the paint store I ended up with just a modified version of what I already had, even though in the store it looked softer and not so orange. I've tried a couple of the Debbie Travis paint pots but no luck with the ones so far. Guess i'll keep trying
Once again thanks for you input.
