I have recently had a fire in my home and my clothing has had some damage from the smoke--- not just odors but staining from the smoke. Is there any way to get these stains out???

I would imagine that just not the smoke, but the heat may of driven these stains into the clothes. The smoke was most likely made up of numerouse different things that where on fire. I would say cleaning would be close to impossible. Best thing i can suggest would be a color safe bleach detergent to try to deodorize and clean the clothes. Let sit in the washer with the detergent with the drum filled. But shut the washer off and let dwell 30 mins or so. Then launder as usually. If it doesnt come out DO NOT DRY. As this will set it. If it already has been dried i would again repeat my above comment as it being permanent.

I don't know what exactly was done, but the fire restoration company that worked on my parents' house after their fire took all the clothes, linens and drapes out and had them cleaned. If you call the fiehouse near you and ask who they recommend for fire restoration you might be able to get an idea what they do to get things like this clean.

Fire restorationists recommend heavy duty liquid laundry detergent. They find it most effective for removing smoke odors and stains. Pretreat stains with the detergent and soak in hottest water recommended for fabric. Then, wash in detergent, hot water, and 2 cups ammonia. Repeat as necessary.
