Sad to say, I am not knowledgeable in air conditioning compressors. My 7 year compressor by Rheem went out and I am being quoted a price of 1400.00 to replace it with a 10 seer Carrier. Is this reasonable? I was also told I couldn't go to anything over 10 seer to save more energy without replacing everything inside.
Being a single Mom I don't want to be taken.

Not knowing what tonnage your 10 seer is I'd say $1400 for a carrier is a pretty good number. Does this include or exclude labor for the install? I think I would call around and get at least 2 more quotes to be sure.

It's a 3 ton and the price includes installation. A friend of mine who met with the AC guy told me that some wires leading to the compressor were rusted out causing the it to burn out. Nothing was said about the possibility of repairing it.

Unless you are completely satisfied that compressor is dead, I would get a 2nd opinion.
Good LucK!
