I have an old cubed army chest from my basement that I am trying to strip and stain. The chest was last painted white about 35 years ago. Upon sanding, which was/is quite a chore, I noticed that the white oil based paint had been applied over what appears to be an army green oil-based paint. When I applied the paint stripper to this paint, it left a greasy film on it.

I have tried paint stripper, methyl hydrate and sanding with only limited success with sanding (and 80 base sandpaper and I use and electric sandpaper like crazy - can sand for 15 minutes and make such a small dent that I am beginning to wonder whether or not it is worth it).

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can strip this chest down to the original wood.

Thanks

/g

Pure methylene chloride is the most powerful finish remover commonly available and will remove any finish. Use the gel type because once it dries it si no longer working. Paint usually comes off in layers so you may require several applications to get down to the wood.
