I purchased an Emerson condenser motor 1/6 hp 1075 230V fan motor to replace the motor that just went out. The old fan motor had only 3 wires (orange, purple and black). I figured connecting the new one would be simple. However, the new motor has four wires (white, black, brown and brown/white stripe) plus a green ground wire. Can anyone tell me which wire is which in comparison to the old motor. Obviously I'm new to this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The new motor should have a wiring diagram on its tag, you have probably got a universal replacement motor. Black and white are usually line voltage and the brown and brown with white stripe go to the new capacitor that you should have purchased along with the new motor! most likely your old one ran off a dual capacitor that ran both the fan motor and compressor? green is obviously ground. I would guess that the old motor line voltage was orange and black with the purple to the dual run capacitor??? Are you sure you want to attempt this? AO smith makes a nice universal replacement also it is also reversible.
