I have a question or maybe need a different opinion. I painted my all wood (built in 1962) kitchen cabinets a "fire engine red", my knobs are black with white hinges. My walls are a light grey and I have some black accents throughout. Anyway...I am trying to NOT have any wood pieces in my kitchen. But I have a dilemma, I have a cabinet that is free standing and I don't want to get rid of it. Should I paint it red also and change out the knobs and hinges to match the rest of the cabinets? OR would it be okay to paint it black or white with opposite knobs and hinges? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!! :)

Hello!
One question:
Why are the cabinet hinges white? I'd paint them either the red, or black to match the knobs.
It sounds to me as though this room could get pretty busy-looking. So just based upon what you've said here, I'd tend to recomment painting the free-standing cabinet to match the others. Or, simply paint it black. But I'd be inclined to paint the hinges black as well, and then use the same black knobs as from the other cabinets. That's just my gut instinct, and based upon the limited information you've shared here!
Do you have table/chairs in the room? What colors are they? What about fabrics? Floor?

^^^ i agree ^^^
those hinges need to be black or red. i think i'd go red, to reduce the number of "little black things" on the sea of red cabinetry, and so your eye goes to the knobs.
another option would be to replace the hinges & hardware with chrome or brushed nickel ones. you've probably got stainless or chrome appliances, or are they black - or white?
i would paint the free standing cabinet the same as your table & chairs (probably black, right?), and allow the cabinets to be the eye-catching red element in the room. the cabinets are pretty much the focal point of a kitchen, so they should be allowed to shine. then just use red here & there as accents.

Thanks for your help. I guess I just thought I needed something to break up the red and I wanted white to be an accent color also (red, grey, white, black) throughout the room. My border is a splash print of those colors listed. The table and chairs are black (cushions are, at this moment, white...debating on covering those) The room doesn't look "busy", as it is a pretty good size kitchen. The stand alone cabinet is no where near the main cabinetry in the kitchen, it's kind of off to itself in a corner but near a window with black curtains with black and white striped ties. My appliances are white, with the exception of my microwave which is black and is now encased into the area where my wall oven used to be (I had that and my drop in stove taken out and now just have a regular stove/oven...it is all white except has a black front door and black controls) Okay..now back to my hinges....I guess I would have to go with red, since I could do that without having to take them down again, I have redone this entire kitchen on my own, I did have a carpenter and an electrician do the removal of my old appliances, so taking those cabinets down AGAIN is out of the question! If you have any other suggestions please post them, and thanks again for taking the time to read this.

It already occurred to you those cabinets are two spots shy of ladybugs?
If you have kids, this could be a serious proposal. And leave the hinges - ladybug's hinges are black.

if the freestanding cabinet is off in another corner, and that corner needs a shot of red, then go for it. it all sounds really cute. i think i'd add some pattern in with all the solids, like maybe cover the white chair cushions with the black & white stripe fabric you used for the window treatment ties (which might be more practical, too!). you could even use red piping on them for an accent.
when using really bold colors like you are, it helps to think of them in terms of one or two dominant colors, and one or two accent colors. so maybe, when faced with decisions like this, think about how you want it to feel. like, do you want a black & white kitchen with red accents? or a red & white kitchen with black accents? etc. things get visually chaotic when the colors are used equally. but it sounds like you're on the right track!
