I hope one of your A/C professionals can help me on this. I purchased a Payne 2 1/2 ton unit 1 year ago August for my rental unit, it was used from Sept.-Oct. (I'm in Florida). The unit was not blowing cold a few weeks ago and the service tech who installed it came out. He said that when the a/c unit comes from the factory it is not fully charged and "this is NORMAL" that after a little bit of use, it would need freon???? I have never heard of such a thing. My dad is retired from Carrier and tells me that there must be a leak in order for it to need freon. Of course I got charged for the freon even though the unit is under warrenty. It sounds like this guy was lying to me or is it possible that the units are not fully charged. And should he have charged me for freon ? I really appreciate any input from you professionals. Thank you

When the condensor comes from the factory they are pre-charged with refrigerant. But rarely are they ever correct, they should always be checked and the charge trimmed because 9 times out of 10 they are off.
If this is the installing contractor then he should not have charged you 1 dime and if it has a leak he should fix it free. If you bought it elsewhere then he had every right to charge you.
A good tech can tell right away if the system is low on refrigerant. Him saying that it has to run a while is B.S.

As usual Matt is right on target. If tech just topped off system and failed to check for leak(should have at least placed some dye in system), more than likely you will have similar problem in future depending on severity of leak. You should not have been charged for the service call-I would complain if this was the installing dealer of your equipment.
Good LucK!

Did he charge you extra for that load of bull? LOL to answer your original question it is not unusual at all for a 1 year old unit to have a leak, it is actually likely if it was a poor install. Best you can do now is check your warranty paperwork and monitor the unit closely as you probably do have a leak hold their feet to the fire and have them make it right.
