I am in the process of installing eight ceiling fans with lights in my new home in sunny Phoenix. Two down and six to go. The first two rooms had separate switches for the fan and the light. Black, white, red and copper were the wires in the ceiling. They work great - no problems. The rest of the rooms have just one switch for the fan which is no problem as I was going to wire the fan and light together anyway. When I went to wire the next fan I discovered the same black, white, red and copper wires in the ceiling. Curious so I opened the switch plate in the room. There is a red capped wire not used in the box. There is also a switched outlet in the room. Would there be any problem connecting the red wire in the ceiling to the fan light and connect the red wire in the box to the switched outlet circuit? This way I assume I will have a switched outlet along with the fan light. Correct? Thanks for your help.

I'm not sure I understand exactly what you propose, but your situation sounds perfect for replacing the single switch with a duplex switch and then you'll have separate switches for the fan's motor and the fan's light.

Does that one existing switch in the room already control both the ceiling's black wire and the receptacle(s) in the same room?

Sorry if I did not explain properly. There are two switches in the room. One for a switched receptacle in the room and one for the fan. What I am shooting for is adding the fan light to the switched receptacle circuit. Thanks for the reply.

You can do that if and only if they are on the same circuit (i.e., controlled by the same circuit breaker). Otherwise, it would create a hazard.

Same breaker. Thanks for mentioning that. Done deal, works great!

When we spec'd the new home, standard equipment was ceiling fan(braced too)and light switches for the great room and master bedroom. Optionally were braced ceiling fan and one switch for $150 per room. This is what I upgraded to in six rooms. An additional light switch was another $100 per room. So if all the other rooms are wired like this one, I saved $600. :) :)
