I just moved into a dorm room and the only lighting is a big flourescent light fixture on the ceiling. The light is very harsh and I wondered if anyone knew of any things I could use (maybe attach to the cover) to make the light less harsh. Or could I use a flourescent bulb of a different color to tone it down? Thanks for your help!

I've seen people loosely attach a square of fabric to the ceiling with thumbtacks on either side of the fixture. To avoid a fire hazard, don't let the fabric touch the fixture.

You might try using a "warm white" or a "kitchen and bath" lamp instead of the "cool white" lamp that is probably in the fixture now.
They're "pinker" and not as harsh.

I'd use floor and table lamps.
