Hello Everyone,

I have a good question for you. I noticed a few weeks ago that the A/C unit wasn't working so I completely removed the filter and let it dethaw...I figured it was frozen up. Since then I have left the filter out so it could get better air circulation. For the past 2 days I have noticed the A/C not blowing cool air at all. Yesterday I noticed it around 2pm. It sounds like everything is working but nothing is coming out of the vents. I shut the A/C off for 2 hours and it was 100+ outside since I live in Arizona. It turned it back on and it started blowing cool air and I let it run from 4pm on, but it never got any cooler than 75 degrees. I woke up this morning at 7am and noticed it was a little hot and checked the vents...sure enough they were not blowing any air, but when I checked them at 5am they were. I shut off the unit for 2 hours and then powered it back up at 9am and it was blowing cool air again.

I was curious what might be causing this since I have removed the filter. If I need to have something fixed will they need to enter my house to do so or can they fix it by working on the outside unit alone? Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.

Was the coil froze up again when you lost the air flow?

Was the blower runing when you had no air flow?

Almost sounds like it's low on charge, and the coil is freezing up on you, and not letting the air go though it.

Thanks for the reply. Well, everything sounded like it was still working. The blower, I am guessing the part that is inside my home, was still making noise like it was running but no air was coming out the vent. I live on the 3rd floor apartment and we run central air. Each apartment has its own AC unit on the ground floor. I took the filter out of the equipment that was in the house for the return flow, I believe. I am not sure where the coils would be located to check those though.

Symptons of freezing coil are typical of a unit that has a evaporator coil stopped up with dirt or a low refrigerant charge. Evaporator coil will be inside the housing inside the crib and may require panel and or ductwork removal to see it. Might be a good idea to just have a HVAC company come clean/service your unit if you want to attempt to access post back your interest and someone can direct you a bit on where to look for the evap coil to see if it is dirty be sure not to run your unit without the filter in place since the evap coil will become dirty very quickly if it is not already.
