My daughter just accidently dumped a bowl of hot oatmeal on a new red wool area rug in her first apartment. I told her to scrape it off and then clean with cold water. Any other suggestions?

That sounds like the best advice. Other than the obvious to make sure she doesnt clean it in place on the floor...so water doesnt soak thru. I would avoid overwetting as most rug backings will expand and then they can remain "wavy".

Scraping off excess and blotting from outside toward the middle with plain water will be effective. Then, use pH neutral mild soap and water or rug shampoo for wool to blot clean. Then, blot with plain water to rinse.
