I have black antiqued painted furniture from Pottery
Barn. Can I put a dark brown stain over this so that it will match with expresso furniture?

It is possible to stain the furniture, but the paint will have to be completely removed first
You can't stain over the paint
If brown paint would look OK you could do that w/o stripping the furniture

If you have a good name brand paint store in the area talk to them about a glaze. This can be applied over paint and can be applied (with a little practice) to give a wood grain effect.

George,

Thanks so much for the information. Will a Home Depot work or should I go to Sherwin Williams?

Talk to both and use your judgement as to which one knows what they're talking about...

SW or a local independent paint shop are by far, much better places to get info from

It did seem implied :)

I really can't say enough about a local independent paint store for information... and for products

Thanks for the advice. I guess now I will actually have to do some painting.
