Hello,
Does anyone know where I can purchase a portable AC rated at no more then 5000/5500 btu. I am getting too old to wrestle getting a regular AC unit into a window opening. I believe the smallest I seen on the net was rated at 6500 btu's. The room it will cool is 15 by 16 foot by 8 foot high. The ceiling has 4 inches of blown in insulation. The roof is flat and is about 18 inches above the ceiling. I am the only occupant and it makes sense to just cool the sleeping area and set the thermostate a bit higher so that the downstairs will have some cooling.

The protable units does ok.. I am not sure what size they come.. We had them at our store, and we are done for the year with them.
The reason i say it does "Okay" is that the unit draws the room air to cool the condesor, and blows it outside.. Now that air that is blown outside has to be made up in the room.. so you will have air coming into the room or house from the outside.. so in a way, you're pulling the cool air that you have in the room out.

Jay11j,
I have to live with that. At 65 years old, I don't want to be picking these up to place in a window anymore. I already told my relatives, I don't move furniture anymore. So a portable is on my purchase list for next season unless I can get a good buy on one right now. Thanks, Bob.

I just bought a 5150BTU from Sears Kenmore for $80. It's pretty light compared to other window A/C units; maybe 50 lbs. It's Sears item #04274054000 and you can buy it online. The portables were just too expensive at $400 for me. Good luck.

Why do you have to keep taking it out of the opening? Can you not just buy a nice heat pump (heat plus cool) window shaker and leave it in year round.

Dnti,
I don't know what you mean by window shaker. The present window unit is old and starting to make fan noise; so a new unit is in the future. I just had new "Pella wood windows installed and they are air tight and leaving a window
unit in during the winter would create a draft or air leaks and any means to seal up the window would appear not too good. A portable unit would be easy to set up and/or removed. My present central Air/heat was just replaced with a new High tech system. But the duct run to my bedroom has too many turns I suspect and does not cool as well as another bedroom that is slightly smaller.

Thanks for explanation that makes sense, if I were you I would research a bit on maybe having your duct system professionally balanced also may want to check insulation in the ceiling above etc. no way I would pay big bucks for a high tech system and then throw in a portable AC unit, just my opinion by the way a window shaker refers to a window unit they tend to be noisy we call them shakers because of the racket don't you know. I am a bit biased against portable AC units we have many on site at a Industrial manufacturing facility and they have been found to be high maintenance items I throw them in the dumpster fairly regularly LOL
